Most transmissions use gears and gear trains to adapt the output of your engine to your wheels. To keep these gears running smoothly your vehicle employs transmission fluid, which acts as a lubricant. Although not as hot as an engine, the transmission also uses the transmission fluid to keep things cool. Over time transmission fluid breaks down and must be replaced.
Each manufacturer recommends transmission fluid be changed at different intervals per vehicle.
